Why smoke at all?
Why do we smoke? It' s a simple question, but how many of
us ask that question of ourselves? The most common answer
is 'because I' m addicted to it' . But that' s not exactly
true. Smoking itself, is not addictive, it' s a habit.
It' s something we have got used to doing in order for us to feel
a bit better, if only for a few minutes, or at least until the cigarette
has finished.
So why do we really smoke? The simple answer is, because
smoking gives us something. It does something for us in order
to get through the day. Smoking isn' t about the nicotine,
it' s about the feeling we get when we smoke it. Smoking is
the best habit to have, seriously, because whatever it gives us,
we can have that 20, 30 or even 40 times per day, every time you
light up a cigarette. You couldn' t do that with drink or
drugs or even chocolate.
We all know we should give up smoking. We are constantly
being told by family, friends and the media to give up because of
our health, because it' s expensive, because it' s becoming socially
unacceptable, but these reasons just aren' t enough. Smoking
is the one thing that makes you feel a bit better or makes everything
seem 'right' . So it' s not surprising that it can be a bit
of an uphill struggle when you try and quit.
So you try the gum, the patches, the cutting down, but the so called
'withdrawal' is just too much. You' ve had a crap day or had
a row with somebody and there' s nothing to make you feel any better.
So what do you do? You think about smoking again, then you
can' t get it out of your head, then all you can do, is light one
up and immediately feel a bit better.
Giving up smoking
Another problem when we try to give up smoking is that it' s a possibility
that we could 'substitute' the cigars or cigarettes for something
else like chocolate, sweets, drink, or biting your nails, so that
in itself just adds to the reasons to carry on. So many people
say 'I would stop smoking but I know I' ll put on weight if I do'
. That' s because they are substituting the smoking for food.
We all need 'something' to get us through. We also want instant
results. Some distant hope that we will be healthier just isn't
going to motivate us enough to quit.
In order for us to give up smoking, we need something in return.
Something that isn' t going to make us feel hard done by, something
that will be worth more than smoking. So what would you want
in order for it to be worth giving up? Less stress, more confidence,
more positive? What if you had a sense of pride and pleasure, knowing
that you can cope with anything the day throws at you ' without
the need for cigarettes or cigars?
