What is anxiety?
Everyone has experienced anxiety at some point in their lives.
Anxiety is able to alert us to dangerous situations, it allows us
to keep ourselves safe and aware of situations that we find ourselves
in. Anxiety can strike at any time, and for most people it
is temporary and will go away once that particular situation is
over.
Anxiety is a timeless, formless, feeling that can occur at any
time. It is a fear of the unknown. Many people who experience
anxiety on a regular basis will tell you that they have no idea
why they are feeling this way but they have an overwhelming fear
that something bad will happen. This isn't just being negative
or pessimistic, this is an actual unknown fear that can take over.
It is a feeling of being out of control. If we knew why we were
feeling anxious, we just wouldn't feel anxious anymore, we could
rationalise it.
There are many ways that anxiety can be expressed, the most common being panic attacks and psychosomatic symptoms.
A panic or anxiety attack can be triggered by various situations including phobias. These can be incredibly
frightening. Panic attacks happen very suddenly and can appear to the
sufferer that they are going to have a heart attack or even die.
The truth is no-one has ever died from a panic attack, but that doesn’t
make them any less intense.
A panic attack
is caused by severe, internal anxiety. An attack happens very
quickly and can last for up to 10-15 minutes. During a panic
attack you may feel one or more of the following:
- A sudden feeling of danger or fear
- Heart beating faster
- Clammy hands
- Shallow breathing
- Intense sweating
- Shaking
- Chest pain or tightness
- Feeling light headed or fainting
- Thoughts of dying
Everyone at some point has had an experience of
a panic attack for one reason or another, but when panic
attacks or anxiety begins to affect your everyday life, a course of Pure Hypno-analysis will help to release the inner conflict causing your anxiety.
Psychosomatic Symptoms
The second way of anxiety expressing itself is through physical
symptoms. There are literally hundreds of psychosomatic symptoms
that can be caused by anxiety. Many that are listed on my
symptoms page are considered psychosomatic. What I mean by
this, is that some symptoms have no medical explanation. It
is believed by many that psychosomatic symptoms are just 'in the
head' of the sufferer and are not real, this is not true.
Any symptom that a person is suffering is very real, it just means
there is no medical explanation as to why they are experiencing
it.
The mind controls the body, therefore any anxiety that is bottled
up inside that person will find an outlet in the physical body or
as an emotional or psychological problem.
